About Maternity Mates

WHFS (Women's Health & Family Services) launched the pioneering Maternity Mates project in 2010, which recruits and provides accredited training to volunteers to help pregnant women in Tower Hamlets and Newham who need extra support.

We concentrate on positive outcomes in three key areas

• Birth experience and preparing women to care for their baby (both emotionally and practically)
• Employment and education prospects for volunteers
• Supporting health professionals to help the mother to make informed decisions about her care, and that of her baby

What kind of volunteer are we looking for?

• We are looking for four volunteers to support us in carrying out an in-depth evaluation of our Maternity Mates project.
• Individuals should be motivated to learn more about qualitative research, improve their employability skills and contribute positively to the project.
• Living in east London would be an advantage.
• Enthusiasm, awareness of confidentiality, attention to detail, flexibility, listening skills, openness to learning and sharing are all important for this placement.

What will the volunteer work involve?

• Conducting in-depth interviews with vulnerable mothers, volunteers and health professionals
• Attending local events and workshops with the project team and partners
• Transcribing and analysing qualitative data

What do we offer the volunteer?

• Hands-on experience and training in qualitative research methods and Patient & Public Involvement
• Regular input, support and supervision from the team
• There is no payment for the work, but we will cover your travel expenses.

What would be the volunteers' responsibilities?

• To dedicate 2 to 3 hours per week to the project for 6 months
• To maintain e-mail communication with the supervisor as necessary at other times in the week
• To follow a work schedule, to be agreed with the project team, in a reliable and responsible way
• To undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

About WHFS Trustees

WHFS (Women’s Health & Family Services) is governed by a women-led, volunteer Board of Trustees who are elected each year at the Annual General Meeting.  The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategic and policy direction for staff, finances and resources. 

WHFS benefits from a Trustee Board which has a rich and diverse range of skills and expertise, including public health experience, the understanding which comes from being a practising GP, high-level political experience, fundraising and networking skills.

On an annual basis, the Board of Trustees reviews its membership composition (both the number and skill sets of Trustees), in light of WHFS’s current priorities.

The process to become a WHFS Trustee:

• Please send an email to the Joint Chair - details below - outlining why you would like to become a WHFS Trustee and the skills you are offering.
• The Joint Chair will contact you for an informal telephone discussion.
• A meeting at the WHFS offices will then be arranged with you and a Trustee.
• The Trustee will report back to the Board of Trustees about your suitability.
• You will then be invited to attend a Trustee Board meeting as an observer and to meet the Board.
• The Board will make a recommendation to the Annual General Meeting if you are suitable to become a WHFS Trustee.
• You will be given feedback if your request to become a Trustee is not recommended.

Volunteers are at the heart of the way

We value your life experience and skills, not just academic qualifications.  WHFS has a long history of supporting and developing our volunteers, whatever their aspiration and needs.  Some of our volunteers have been supporting our projects for several years, with many going on to further study or jobs within the health sector.

All our community volunteers receive:

• FREE, and in the case of Maternity Mates, accredited training
• One-to-one support: we seek to support each volunteer individually, so they can not only contribute their skills and experience to their community, but can also gain valuable experience and work opportunities where these are sought
• Out of pocket expenses for travel
• Certificate of attendance and reference provided (for people who volunteer for at least the minimum period required for the project)

In 1981 WHFS began working in Tower Hamlets - we now work across several east London boroughs and are actively expanding our reach.  If you’re a local person who shares our values and is looking for a rewarding volunteering role, we’d love to hear from you.

Maternity Mates

A Maternity Mate is a female volunteer trained to provide emotional and practical support to women in need of extra support during pregnancy, childbirth and the early weeks of motherhood. WHFS provides accredited training to Level 3 with the London Open College Network (OCN), which also counts as 9 points towards the Access to Midwifery course, Doula Skills & Breastfeeding Support Level 3.  Maternity Mates works in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest.

WHFS Development Volunteers

FGM /C Volunteer Peer Supporters

WHFS works with communities in Tower Hamlets who are affected by FGM /C (female genital mutilation /cutting).  We raise awareness amongst both men and women of the negative health effects, as well as supporting women who have undergone (or who are at risk of) this debilitating practice.  WHFS staff and volunteers working on FGM /C projects come from practising communities and speak Somali and/or Arabic.

WHFS has had an overwhelming response to our recruitment for volunteer Peer Supporters, and we currently have a waiting list for these roles.  We hope to train more Peer Supporters in 2017, and so please contact us if you would like to get involved.  Peer supporters are trained in safeguarding, confidentiality and befriending, and play an important role in supporting women to gain access to health services.
