WHFS (Women’s Health & Family Services) is a community health charity based in Tower Hamlets that focuses on health and empowerment issues for disadvantaged women and their families. Volunteers are central to our organisation and we benefit enormously from their contribution.
WHFS has at its core a community-volunteer model whereby most services are provided by volunteers trained by WHFS, and in the case of Maternity Mates, provided with accredited training.
We work primarily (although not only) with Bangladeshi, Somali, Chinese, Vietnamese, eastern European and white communities and it is WHFS’s policy to actively recruit and train volunteers from these local communities. We believe life-experience and cultural knowledge are just as valuable to our work as formal qualifications: everybody has skills to offer and we work as a community, not as individuals.
Our particular strength is finding, recruiting and encouraging people to become volunteers and providing good quality, accredited training, peer mentoring and related support.
We currently have a pool of around 100 motivated, committed and loyal volunteers who are representative of the communities in Tower Hamlets. People volunteer with us for different reasons, including developing their skills and qualifications in a range of health areas - from Maternity Mates™ to FGM /C (Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

We regularly have one-off project opportunities for volunteers and are constantly on the lookout for enthusiastic local professionals and students who share our passion. We post specific roles here as they are identified – but do feel free to Contact Us to find out more about how you might contribute to our work.
