Happy Healthy Hearts
The Happy Healthy Hearts project has been completed and is now closed. This page is for information only.
WHFS (Women’s Health & Family Services) received funding from The Big Lottery to conduct a 6-month pilot project, Happy Healthy Hearts. The main aim was to support patients throughout Tower Hamlets at risk of developing - or already living with - Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD) by providing the support of WHFS Befriending Volunteers, trained by the British Heart Foundation.
Befrienders supported 40 newly-diagnosed or at-risk patients (both men and women) to manage their condition, as well as offering help and advice on healthy diets and keeping fit. We trained 12 Befrienders to support these patients to help them to understand and manage their condition, and encouraged them to attend health check-ups with doctors and nurses. Befrienders were matched to the ethnicity of their patients and visited or contacted them once a week.
We also conducted 6 community awareness sessions to explore lifestyle changes that are easy to make, such as adding exercise into daily routines and making small changes to cooking and eating.
